Former Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim has urged BRICS+, which now includes South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia, to take the opportunity to form a strategic partnership with Africa. In her article on Project Syndicate, Dr. Gurib-Fakim emphasizes that both sides share a legacy of resisting colonial exploitation and confronting global financial inequalities.

Dr. Gurib-Fakim notes that Africa already engages in significant trade with BRICS+ countries, particularly China, India, and Brazil, and urges the bloc to deepen existing connections.  She argues that BRICS+ should actively contribute to Africa’s development by addressing energy and debt crises, financing infrastructure, and promoting sustainability.  She believes the New Development Bank can provide fairer financing options than Western institutions, helping Africa to assert its voice in global governance and shape a more balanced, inclusive international financial system.
